About this Event
Named for the Royal Family’s castle in Scotland, Balmoral developed during Calgary’s real estate boom in the early 1900s and was later absorbed into Tuxedo Park.
Our tour begins at the recently transformed Balmoral Circus Park, one of only two circuses in Calgary. From there, we’ll stroll through the community and learn about its history and significance for Calgary’s past. Highlights include a row of preserved workers’ cottages, the mixed commercial block that housed the second branch of the Calgary Public Library, and Balmoral Bungalow School—its design unique to Calgary. We circle back to Balmoral Circus, which was originally inspired by Calgary Parks Superintendent William Reader and the City Beautiful movement in the 1930s.
Optional activity after the walk: If the weather is fine, bring a lunch to eat at the tables in Balmoral Circus Park.
YOUR WALK LEADER: Susan Calder is a Calgary writer and the author of six novels set in Calgary. Her latest release, A Killer Whisky, is a M**der mystery that takes place during the 1918 influenza pandemic, World War One, and Alberta Prohibition. The novel’s protagonist and the M**der victim live in typical Balmoral working class homes. Susan has a BA in Urban Studies from Concordia University, Montreal. She loves walking and biking in and around Calgary.
WALK NOTES: Breaks offered along the way, will use speakers, voice amplification
