About this Event

About this event

Come and help us document nature during our Biodiversity Walks! These event will take place during international, national, and provincial bioblitz days and will help us document nature throughout St. Patrick's Island and during different times of year. We encourage you to photograph and document flora and fauna on the island using the iNaturalist app.

DATES:

CITY NATURE CHALLENGE - APRIL 25, 9:30am - 11:30am

ALBERTA BIODIVERSITY CHALLENGE - JUNE 13, 9:30am - 11:30am

BIG BACKYARD BIOBLITZ - AUGUST 2, 9:30am - 11:30am

We'll talk about some of the history of the island, some of the changes it's gone through! Of course, we will be taking photos of any interesting plants and animals we come across and upload our observations to the iNaturalist app.

Please have it installed on your phone before you arrive or bring your camera so that you can take photos and upload them after the walk.

Our knowledgeable guides will share fascinating insights about the birds and other wildlife you encounter and talk about their behaviours, making this a great educational opportunity for nature enthusiasts of all ages.

We will have binoculars available for participants who don't have them. Space is limited so don't miss your chance to discover the beauty and diversity of Calgary's birdlife on this exciting nature walk!

These walks are presented in partnership between East Village and Nature Calgary, with all registration fees being donated directly to Nature Calgary.

All walks will start along the East Village River Board walk, located directly north of 656 Confluence Way SE on the RiverWalk pathway.

Please note that this is an outdoor event please dress for the conditions. We will provide notice in writing and refund your tickets if the weather meets the following conditions:

  • Adverse weather conditions (Smoke, Heavy Rain/Snow, flooding, etc.)
  • Temperatures below -20C including wind chill
  • At the discretion of CMLC supervisor based on weather conditions.

The Biodiversity Walks are accessible to all, regardless of age or ability.

  • The pathways are flat. Some pathways are unpaved but they are well compacted. The paved pathways are cleared for snow but there may be icy patches. Guides will exercise discretion based on the group's abilities on which pathways they will take. Please let the guide know if you feel uncomfortable with any chosen path - want to ensure you feel safe!
  • Nature Calgary has taken measures to accommodate those with sight or hearing impairments
  • Guides are knowledgeable about bird calls to assist those with sight impairments
  • Sight cues will be available for those with hearing impairments
  • Dogs are not allowed at the event unless medically necessary. This helps ensure the safety and comfort of the wildlife
  • The event is LGBTQ+ friendly, welcoming people of all orientations and identities.
