TIPLA Fall 2024 Faculty
Tony Schlehuber is an Associate General Counsel with Vanderbilt University’s Office of the General Counsel. Tony is responsible for intellectual property matters across the university, ranging from research and innovation to copyrights to trademarks. Tony additionally provides counsel on data privacy issues and international contracting.
Daniel Bruzzone is a Partner within Merchant and Gould’s Minneapolis office. Daniel is a dedicated IP attorney who practices patent prosecution and filing strategy. Daniel has filed dozens of ex parte appeals for different clients with different approaches. This led Daniel to lead an investigation into reasons for different levels of success for these different styles, and develop best practices for arguments that are persuasive to the PTAB.
Emily Threatt is a 3L at the University of Tennessee College of Law. Following graduation, Emily will clerk with the USPTO's Patent Trial and Appeal Board. After completing her clerkship, she looks forward to returning to Merchant and Gould as an Associate. Emily received a B.S. in electrical engineering from Western Carolina University.
Dr. Seth Ogden is a Shareholder with Patterson Intellectual Property Law. Seth focuses his practice on patent litigation and the protection of clients’ trade secrets. He has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical, medical device, biotechnology, and chemical technology industries. His scientific background and years of experience in the laboratory give him a unique insight when working with clients in these industries. Seth litigates intellectual property cases throughout the country, in inter partes review proceedings before the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and in Section 337 investigations before the International Trade Commission and has argued before the Federal Circuit. He is also experienced in pre-trial discovery work, claim analysis, and motions practice. Outside of litigation, Seth has proficiency in developing trade secret protection plans for clients ranging from industrial manufacturers to data analytics firms.
Eric Williams is a partner at Barnes & Thornburg, LLP. Eric advises on IP portfolio development and management to companies for protecting their pharmaceutical, medical device, and chemical inventions. Eric’s practice includes counseling higher education clients, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, and agriculture and food-based organizations. Eric has a strong agricultural background and is the co-chair of the firm’s Ag and Food Practice Group. While earning his Doctor of Ph*rm*cy degree at Purdue University, Eric conducted research on the ErbB family of tyrosine kinase receptors, leading to authorship of multiple journal articles and several symposium abstracts. Prior to law school, Eric completed postdoctoral fellowship in clinical research at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and worked as a scientist at GlaxoSmithKline and Eli Lilly.
Sam Parson is a Law Fellow at the Vanderbilt University Office of the General Counsel. He specializes in transactional law and intellectual property following his graduation from Vanderbilt University Law School in 2023.
Luke Yordy is an attorney in the Nashville Office of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP. His practice focuses primarily on patent and trademark prosecution. Relying on his chemical engineering background, Luke has drafted and prosecuted numerous patent applications for mechanical and chemical inventions in sporting goods, appliances, manufacturing, hardware, and construction industries among others. Luke also counsels clients on issues related to patentability, infringement review, and competitor analysis. In the trademark space, Luke counsels client on the selection and prosecution of trademarks, monitors client trademark portfolios, and assists with trademark enforcement. During law school, he also had his student note, The Library of Babel for Prior Art: The Mass Production of Prior Art Using Artificial Intelligence, published in the Vanderbilt Law Review.
Peter L. Brewer is a patent attorney with the firm of Thrive IP®, an intellectual property boutique based in Charleston, South Carolina. He is licensed to practice in Tennessee and Texas. Peter has an engineering degree from Texas A&M University, and is a former Briefing Attorney to the Texas Supreme Court. Much of Peter’s practice relates to energy including geothermal projects, carbon capture, energy storage devices, and upstream oil and gas.
