Tile Works

Discover the art of sgraffito in this engaging ceramics class! Students will design and create a unique ceramic tile while learning the traditional sgraffito technique, which involves applying colored slip to clay and then carving through the surface to reveal the clay body underneath. Throughout the class, participants will explore design principles, pattern-making, line work, and texture while developing foundational ceramic skills.

The instructor will guide students through every step of the process, including tile construction, slip application, carving techniques, and finishing methods. Whether creating abstract patterns, nature-inspired imagery, or personal designs, students will leave with a finished tile that showcases their creativity and craftsmanship. This class is suitable for beginners as well as those with prior ceramics experience who want to expand their decorative surface techniques.

This class is specifically designed for people of all abilities to experience making with clay. It will take place in the ground floor MakerSpace Classroom in order to make it more accessible to  anyone with mobility restrictions.

• Everyone is welcome at this workshop! You do not have to have a MakerSpace membership or any affiliation with Utility Works. The rate for non members is $20

• The Highland avenue parking lot behind Dunkin Doughnuts is also available for parking, if there is not closer street parking.
