🥾 Description
This walk takes us deep into the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, following part of the High Weald Landscape Trail. The High Weald is famous for its dramatic sandstone outcrops, and this walk showcases three of the finest: Eridge Rocks, Harrison’s Rocks, and High Rocks.
After Eridge Rocks, the trail skirts Broadwater Warren Nature Reserve, where the RSPB is restoring heathland and native woodland, creating a haven for wildlife. A scenic loop around Harrison’s Rocks offers a chance to watch climbers tackling the sheer sandstone faces, adding a unique spectacle to the day. Later, the route follows the Grom valley alongside the Spa Valley Railway, a restored heritage line, and passes the grounds of Groombridge Place, a Jacobean manor house surrounded by a medieval moat.
The final stretch brings us to a glimpse yet another outcrop at High Rocks, before crossing Tunbridge Wells’ large wooded common and finishing in The Pantiles, a famous colonnaded promenade lined with galleries, cafés, and boutique shops. This spa town grew in popularity after its iron-rich waters were discovered in the 17th century and later became a favourite retreat for Queen Victoria, earning its “Royal” title in 1909.
