Space Rocks and Summer Skies
About this Event
Join us at the Blake Planetarium for an exciting journey through the Solar System and the summer night sky. Discover how ancient space rocks are helping scientists uncover the history of our cosmic neighborhood and learn how to find one of summer's most recognizable constellations.
Our feature presentation, Asteroid Quest, explores one of the most fascinating mysteries in astronomy: what are asteroids really like? For billions of years, these rocky remnants from the formation of the Solar System have preserved clues about the origins of Earth and the planets. Today, scientists view asteroids as time capsules that can help us understand our place in the universe.
Travel alongside the robotic spacecraft that have visited these distant worlds and witness the remarkable discoveries made by missions that have collected asteroid samples and returned them to Earth. Learn how these expeditions have transformed our understanding of asteroids, revealing surprising landscapes and unexpected scientific insights.
The show also explores a topic that once seemed like science fiction: planetary defense. While many asteroids orbit the Sun harmlessly, some cross Earth's path. Discover how scientists and engineers are developing techniques to detect, track, and even deflect potentially hazardous asteroids, helping to protect our planet from future impacts.
Following the feature, guests will explore the early summer night sky and discover Scorpius, the Scorpion, one of the season's most striking constellations. We'll focus on Antares, the brilliant red star known as the "Heart of the Scorpion," and learn how to locate this celestial landmark in the evening sky. Participants will also be introduced to a simple partial-sky star map, making it easy to continue their stargazing adventures throughout the summer.
This program combines cutting-edge space exploration with practical stargazing skills, making it a perfect experience for curious minds of all ages.
