Uncovering the Invisible Universe
About this Event
Join us at the Blake Planetarium for an extraordinary exploration of some of the most powerful and mysterious objects in the universe. Discover how scientists study invisible giants lurking at the centers of galaxies and learn how to find one of the most recognizable patterns in the late summer night sky.
Our feature presentation, Supermassive Black Holes: Uncovering the Invisible, takes audiences into the fascinating world of black holes and the galaxies they inhabit. Although black holes themselves cannot be seen directly, their immense gravitational influence shapes the evolution of galaxies and affects the movement of stars, gas, and dust across vast distances.
Using stunning visualizations, cutting-edge scientific data, and the latest research, this immersive fulldome experience reveals how astronomers investigate these cosmic giants. Explore the environments surrounding supermassive black holes, learn how they form and grow, and discover how observations, computer simulations, and advanced technologies are helping scientists unlock some of the deepest mysteries of the universe. The show presents complex scientific ideas in an engaging and accessible way, making one of astronomy's most exciting fields understandable for audiences of all backgrounds.
Following the feature, guests will explore the late summer night sky and learn how to find one of the season's most famous celestial landmarks: the Summer Triangle. Formed by the bright stars Vega, Deneb, and Altair, the Summer Triangle serves as an easy guide to many of the stars and constellations visible on late summer evenings. Participants will also learn how to use a simple partial-sky star map, providing the tools needed to continue their exploration of the night sky at home.
This program is ideal for anyone curious about the cutting edge of astronomy and eager to learn more about the wonders visible in our own night sky.
