Join exhibiting artist Alice Wu to learn how to create soft sculpture through an experimental, materials-driven approach.
About this Event

Work with distinctive and unconventional materials drawn from Alice’s personal archive of contemporary, vintage, and handmade textiles--as well as rare, custom fabric and findings from her clothing line, Feral Childe.

The session includes a short presentation on soft sculpture in contemporary art, looking at artists working with textiles and discussing how materials can inspire form and meaning. Explore a range of textiles while learning accessible construction techniques that do not require a sewing machine. Emphasizing reuse, experimentation, and process, the workshop encourages abstraction, play, and discovery. Techniques may include tying, wrapping, weaving, knotting, stitching, stapling, draping, and stretching. By the end, create a fantastical soft sculpture, contributing to a collective “menagerie” of forms.

Prior sewing experience recommended. All materials and tools provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own as well.
