The Serial Readers Book Club is for stories that take more than one book to tell. Together, we'll make our way through a series from beginning to end, one volume at a time. You don't have to start with us or make it to every meeting—jump in whenever you'd like! This book club is led by the lovely Sammi Snow.
We're continuing Beth Brower's beloved The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, the charming, funny, and thoroughly addictive series told through the journals of an irrepressible young woman making a life for herself in Victorian London. This month, we're reading Volume 4, as Emma's circle grows closer, old mysteries deepen, and life in St. Crispian's continues to prove anything but ordinary.

Four volumes in, Emma's London has begun to feel wonderfully familiar—but familiarity doesn't mean we've figured everyone out. The neighbors, friends, relations, and assorted eccentrics who populate her journals continue to reveal new sides of themselves, while Emma's determination to live life on her own terms leads her into still more unexpected situations.

In Volume 4, the accumulated history of the series becomes part of the fun. Relationships that have been developing across the journals grow richer and more complicated, small moments from earlier volumes take on new meaning, and the questions hovering around Emma and St. Crispian's give us plenty of reasons to keep turning pages. Meanwhile, Emma's sharp observations, stubborn independence, and delightfully particular way of seeing the world remain at the heart of it all.

We'll talk about the relationships that have changed since Volume 1, the characters we trust (and those we still aren't quite sure about), the details and mysteries we're keeping track of, and how our understanding of Emma herself has evolved after spending four volumes in her company.
