Safe Space Training Series: Building Your Mental Health Toolkit
Feeling like your mood and energy levels are lower than usual? Trying to cope with microaggressions at home, work, or out in the community? Looking for resources to support a friend who is struggling? Or perhaps you're curious about how the brain works, and want to understand how it plays a role in depression and anxiety? If any of these resonate with you, you are cordially invited to join us for a collaborative workshop with Justin Kalinay, M.A., Full Spectrum's Director of Community Engagement, and Dr. Pernille Yilmam, Founder and CEO of Mind Blossom, a nonprofit specializing in delivering mental health education to underserved communities.
Dr. Pernille Yilmam holds a PhD in Neuroscience and has a long personal story of serious mental illness, and she founded Mind Blossom to share knowledge and resources around mental health that are proven to enhance people's wellbeing, resiliency, and community. The goal of this training is to provide participants with not only knowledge, such as minority risk factors and warning signs for depression and anxiety; but also actionable tools you can take with you, such as mindfulness techniques and a cognitive reframing exercise. We will also be providing a local and national resource sheet, alongside contact information for local queer-friendly mental health specialists and organizations.
Let's come together to break open that Pandora's box of a brain and converse openly on mental health, as well as the unique barriers present for minority identities. For as Ralph C. Smedley states: “Understanding comes through communication, and through communication we find the way to peace.”
A Short Bio from Each of the Speakers:
Dr. Pernille Yilmam CEO & Founder of Mind Blossom
Hi there! I'm Pernille, and I'm really into mental health, research, and strategic thinking. My background and current roles might seem diverse, but they all revolve around preventing and tackling mental illness. Here, I've summarized my expertise, key skills, and where I apply them.
Hailing from Denmark, I moved to the US in 2013 to complete my B.S. in Psychology at UC Berkeley. My enduring fascination with human development, especially psychological well-being, led me to explore early childhood's impact on behavior and brain development. Pursuing a PhD at Emory University in 2015, I focused on how genetic predisposition shapes brain development. In 2021, I became a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School, delving into sensory perception's role in mental health and well-being. I left Harvard to bridge the gap between academia and society, passionate about using education, technology, and peer-to-peer communities to nurture a physically and psychologically healthy world for future generations.
I currently exercise my skills as:
1. A Communicator
What I do: I teach, write and speak on mental health/illness, education, AI, and biosensors
Where I do it: Mind Blossom, Psychology Today, my newsletter, and as a Freelance Consultant for various companies
2. An Innovator, Strategist and Visionary
What I do: I lead innovation, product strategy and company visions
Where I do it: Mind Blossom, and as a Freelance Consultant for mental health/tech startups
3. A Leader and Collaborator
What I do: I lead smaller teams to perform their best while prioritizing their wellbeing. I also collaborate cross-functionally to develop the best product and service.
Where I do it: Mind Blossom and as a Freelance Consultant
I'd love to connect with you!
