Revolutionary Lives: Flax to Linen with Andrea Myklebust
Andrea Myklebust
During the American Revolution, American patriots grew flax and made their own linen, called ‘homespun’ instead of buying British-made clothes as a political protest. Join weaver, spinner, and independent researcher Andrea Myklebust for an evening of learning how flax plants are turned into linen cloth. Andrea will demonstrate how people grow, ret, dress and spin flax for linen-making, and participants will have a chance to try their hand at ‘spinning straw into gold’ themselves.
Andrea Myklebust is a shepherd, spinner, and hand weaver who began growing flax in 2012. She is a bast fiber researcher and educator who teaches flax-to-linen, warp-weighted loom, and early handloom weaving at venues around the United States. She and her family live in Danby, Vermont.
Revolutionary Lives, a free event series, is produced by the Folklife Center at Crandall Public Library to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga with these events, an exhibition, and an online StoryMap, and made possible with generous grant funding from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership, with additional support from the New York State Council on the Arts supported by the Governor's Office and the New York State Legislature.
