Today it is not commonly known that the Dutch settled in areas north of Albany, including sites in Saratoga, Washington, and Warren Counties. A number of their houses and agricultural buildings remain in this region, testifying to European-American settlement in the 18th century. This talk will discuss these buildings and the social and economic forces that affected changes to building traditions after the Revolution.
Walter R. Wheeler is a Senior Architectural Historian at Hartgen Archeological Associates where he has worked since 1999 on projects throughout the northeast. He has authored approximately 100 articles and 3 monographs on New York State architecture, and most recently overseen the Thematic Survey of Dutch Heritage Resources in the Greater Hudson Valley. He is President of the Turpin Bannister Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians, a founding member and officer of Hudson-Mohawk Vernacular Architecture, serves on the board for Albany County Historical Association, and recently completed a 10-year term as Chair of Troy’s Historic Review Commission.
Revolutionary Lives is produced by the Folklife Center at Crandall Public Library to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga with a yearlong Folklife Gallery exhibition, public-access online StoryMap, and these events, made possible by generous grant funding from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership, with additional support from the New York State Council on the Arts supported by the Governor's Office and the New York State Legislature.
