Embedding excellence in inclusive research practice
About this Event

Healthcare research affects us all. It can change how conditions are diagnosed, improve treatments and transform the care that people receive. But how do researchers decide what to study—and who helps make those decisions?

Join Barts Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary University of London for an engaging evening exploring how patients, carers, local communities and researchers are working together to make research better.

Through accessible talks, personal stories and real examples, you will discover what meaningful public partnership looks like in action – and how it is helping to shape the future of research across East London.

What to expect

The programme will feature talks from researchers and public partners, bringing to life the principles behind meaningful public partnerships and showing how they are shaping our practice.

From widening opportunities for people to get involved in healthcare research and listening to feedback and recognising the contributions of public partners, we will showcase how people are helping researchers ask better questions, make studies more inclusive and transparent, and focus on what matters most to the communities they serve.

You will hear how patients, communities and researchers are working together to improve healthcare research. The talks will explore how we can:

  • Include more people in research from the beginning
  • Build stronger partnerships and give the public a meaningful voice in decisions
  • Provide feedback and show people the difference their involvement has made
  • Reward, value and recognise people’s contributions
  • Develop the skills, confidence and support needed to work well together

The evening will also introduce Barts Health’s institutional Patient and Public Involvement, Engagement and Participation (PPIEP) Strategy. The strategy sets out how we intend to work more consistently and meaningfully with patients, carers and communities across our research.

Researchers’ Marketplace

You will also be able to meet research teams from Barts Health, Queen Mary University of London and partner organisations at our Researchers’ Marketplace. Here, teams will be on hand to talk informally about their studies, answer questions and share interactive activities and displays. You may also discover opportunities to take part in research or contribute your views. There is no expectation to sign up for anything – you are welcome to browse, talk and learn.

During the evening, you can also explore:

  • Research Stories, featuring personal accounts from people who have taken part in research
  • Research Impacts, bringing together six years of research work, achievements and outputs from across Barts Health
  • Barts Health’s institutional PPIEP Strategy and its plans for strengthening public partnership in research, and have your say by completing our survey

The event is hosted at an accessible venue, and we would strongly encourage you to attend in person to experience our Researchers' Marketplace, network with researchers and other attendees, and enjoy our canape reception post event. However, if you cannot make it, you can also join online. A Microsoft Teams link will be sent to online attendees before the day.

Who is the event for?

Everyone is welcome, including patients, carers, local residents, community groups, public contributors, healthcare staff, researchers, students and anyone curious about healthcare research. You do not need any knowledge or previous experience of research to attend. Curiosity is more than enough.
