Recent & Remarkable Book Club: "Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead"
About this Event
The Recent & Remarkable Book Club is devoted to reading modern literary fiction worth talking about. From award winners and international sensations to cult favorites and future classics, we'll explore some of the most compelling books of the past decade.
This month, we’re reading Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk — a fiercely original novel that blends mystery, philosophy, and environmental inquiry. Set in a remote Polish village near the Czech border, the story follows Janina Duszejko, an eccentric retired engineer, amateur astrologer, and passionate human rights advocate. When a series of local hunters begin turning up dead under increasingly strange circumstances, Janina becomes convinced that the natural world may be exacting its own form of justice. Part M**der mystery, part ecological fable, and part meditation on aging, mortality, and belonging, this Booker International Prize-winning novel challenges readers to reconsider humanity's renationship with animals, nature, and one another.
We will meet in person in the loft at our store at The Mark, 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $19, which includes a copy of Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead to be picked up at Bookstore1 any time before our meeting.
Olga Tokarczuk is the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature and the International Booker Prize, among many other honors. She is the author of more than a dozen works of fiction, two collections of essays, and a children’s book; her work has been translated into more than fifty languages.
