The Serial Readers Book Club is for stories that take more than one book to tell. Together, we'll make our way through a series from beginning to end, one volume at a time. You don't have to start with us or make it to every meeting—jump in whenever you'd like! This book club is led by the lovely Sammi Snow.
We're continuing Beth Brower's beloved The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, the charming, funny, and thoroughly addictive series told through the journals of an irrepressible young woman making a life for herself in Victorian London. This month, we're reading Volume 2, as Emma settles further into her new life—and St. Crispian's becomes even harder to resist.

Now established in her great-aunt's house and determined to maintain her independence, Emma continues recording the peculiar people, unexpected friendships, family entanglements, and everyday adventures that have begun to fill her London life. Of course, with Emma, even the everyday has a habit of becoming something else entirely.

In Volume 2, the world introduced in the first installment begins to expand. Familiar faces become more complicated, new relationships take shape, mysteries deepen, and seemingly small details begin to suggest that there may be more going on around Emma than even her observant journal can capture. Through it all, Emma remains wonderfully herself: curious, stubborn, perceptive, occasionally exasperated, and very funny.

We'll talk about what's changed since Volume 1, the characters we're becoming attached to (or suspicious of), the questions Brower is beginning to plant, and the particular pleasure of getting to spend more time inside a fictional world rather than leaving it behind after a single book.
