Indigenous Voices Book Club: "Never Whistle at Night"
About this Event
The Indigenous Voices Book Club is devoted to reading and discussing books by Indigenous writers, bringing together fiction, memoir, history, poetry, and more. Each month, we'll encounter stories and perspectives that deepen our understanding of Indigenous experiences, histories, cultures, and contemporary life.
This month, we're reading Never Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology, edited by Shane Hawk and Theodore C. Van Alst Jr.—a chilling collection of stories by Indigenous writers that draws on horror, folklore, the supernatural, and the very real terrors of history and contemporary life. Featuring voices from across Indigenous communities and traditions, these stories range from eerie and unsettling to gruesome, funny, and downright terrifying, exploring haunted places, strange creatures, family histories, cultural memory, and things better left undisturbed. Named for the widespread warning that whistling at night can invite unwanted attention, Never Whistle at Night showcases the extraordinary range of contemporary Indigenous storytelling while asking what happens when horror becomes a way to confront the past, reclaim old stories, and imagine new ones.

Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home.
These wholly original and shiver-inducing tales introduce readers to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge. Introduced and contextualized by bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones, these stories are a celebration of Indigenous peoples’ survival and imagination, and a glorious reveling in all the things an ill-advised whistle might summon.
