ABOUT THE TALK
The presentation, titled Materia Viva, explores architecture through five interconnected lines of inquiry: earth, water, vegetation, body, and time. Rather than understanding matter as a passive material for construction, the talk approaches it as a living condition: something that transforms, remembers, erodes, grows, shelters, and connects human and non-human forms of life.
Through selected projects by AMBROSI ETCHEGARAY, the presentation will move across landscapes, buildings, exhibitions, and research-based works to reflect on how architecture can listen to and work with the forces already present in a place. Materia Viva proposes architecture as a practice of transformation, where material, climate, memory, and collective life are not separate themes, but active agents in the making of space.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Gabriela Etchegaray is an architect, curator, and researcher based in Mexico City. She is co-founder and design principal of AMBROSI ETCHEGARAY, an architecture studio established in 2011. Her work spans buildings, installations, exhibitions, curatorial projects, research, drawings, maps, and texts, often exploring the intersections between social values, space, nature, materiality, gender, heritage, and living systems.
Etchegaray holds a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from Universidad Iberoamericana, a Master’s in Creative Management and Transformation of the City from ETSAB-UPC, and an M.S. in Critical, Curatorial, and Conceptual Practices in Architecture from Columbia GSAPP. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, and she served as curator of the Mexican Pavilion at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale. She has taught at Columbia GSAPP and has been recognized with awards including the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture and Emerging Voices by The Architectural League of New York.
