ABOUT THE TALK

Towards an Integrated Architectural Practice

From Inspiration to Implementation

Architecture has become an increasingly fragmented discipline, with design, real estate development, and construction often treated as separate domains, limiting the architect's influence and creating a disconnect between concept and built work. This lecture reflects on an alternative mode of practice that seeks to reconnect these disciplines, using Bercy Fadel's projects to illustrate how architects can move beyond their traditional role as service providers to see their designs through from first brainstorm to finished building. At the heart of this approach is tectonic thinking: the belief that architecture is discovered not only through drawings but also through materials, structure, craftsmanship, and the process of construction.

Rather than proposing a return to the historical master builder, this lecture considers how architects can reclaim agency through collaboration, technical knowledge, entrepreneurial thinking, and engagement across a project's entire lifecycle. By bridging design, development, and construction, architects can preserve design intent and deliver buildings that are both intellectually rigorous and grounded in the realities of making. Ultimately, From Inspiration to Implementation is an invitation to rethink architectural practice not as isolated phases, but as an integrated process where ideas, materials, and execution are inseparable.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Thomas Bercy's academic and professional background reflects a multidisciplinary approach to architecture, integrating design, engineering, urbanism, and the visual arts. He studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles (1991–1993), where his fine arts education established a lasting appreciation for composition, craftsmanship, and artistic expression. He later earned both a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor in Architectural Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin (1994–2000), complemented by postgraduate studies in Urban Studies at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (1997–1998), where he explored the cultural and urban dimensions of the built environment.

In 2002, Bercy co-founded Bercy Fadel, an Austin-based architecture, construction, and development practice built on a vertically integrated model that unites design, construction, and real estate development. The practice spans residential, commercial, and master planning projects, while its development efforts focus on urban infill multifamily and workforce housing. Bercy's design philosophy is rooted in sustainability and responsible regionalism, reinterpreting enduring architectural archetypes through a contemporary lens. The practice has received national and international recognition, including the 2024 AD100 list, The Chicago Athenaeum's International Architecture Award (2017), the Texas Society of Architects Honor Award (2016), the Architizer A+ Award in Sustainability (2014), and a feature on Apple TV's Home (2020) series, as well as earlier honors including the European Centre's 40 Under 40 Prize (2009) and selection as an Emerging Voice by The Architectural League of New York (2006).
