The Recent & Remarkable Book Club is devoted to reading modern literary fiction worth talking about. From award winners and international sensations to cult favorites and future classics, we'll explore some of the most compelling books of the past decade.
This month, we’re reading Clear by Carys Davies — a luminous and deeply moving novel about isolation, language, and the unexpected connections that can transform a life. Set in 1843 during Scotland's Highland Clearances, the story follows John Ferguson, a minister sent to a remote island to evict its sole remaining resident, Ivar, a man who has lived alone for decades. When an accident leaves John injured and dependent on the very man he has come to displace, the two forge an unlikely bond despite sharing no common language. Spare, elegant, and quietly profound, Clear explores loneliness, belonging, duty, and what it means to truly see another person.
We will meet in person in the loft at our store at The Mark, 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $17.99, which includes a copy of Clear to be picked up at Bookstore1 any time before our meeting.
Carys Davies’s debut novel West was shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize, runner-up for the Society of Authors’ McKitterick Prize, and winner of the Wales Book of the Year for Fiction. She is also the author of The Mission House, which was The Sunday Times (London) 2020 Novel of the Year, and two collections of short stories, Some New Ambush and The Redemption of Galen Pike, which won the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award and the Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize. Her other awards include the Royal Society of Literature’s V.S. Pritchett Prize, the Society of Authors’ Olive Cook Short Story Award, and a Cullman Fellowship at the New York Public Library. Born in Wales, she lived and worked for twelve years in New York and Chicago, and now lives in Edinburgh. Clear is her most recent novel.
