Ready, Set, Cook! – Build Confidence in the Kitchen
Are you an individual with an intellectual or developmental disability who wants to build confidence and independence in the kitchen?
Ready, Set, Cook! is a fun, hands-on 6-week cooking course designed to teach individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities the skills needed to cook safely, confidently, and independently. Participants actively prepare food each week while learning essential cooking, safety, and meal-planning skills in a structured and supportive environment.
Using real kitchen tools, appliances, and ingredients, participants gain practical experience while learning how to safely navigate the kitchen and prepare meals at home.
Throughout the course, participants will learn how to:
-Safely use kitchen tools, appliances, and cooking equipment
-Prevent and respond to common kitchen accidents and non--emergency situations
-Apply basic first aid for minor cuts and burns
-Follow and adapt recipes
-Practice proper sanitation and food safety
-Avoid cross-contamination and handle food safely
-Manage cooking times and understand safe food temperatures
-Plan meals, shop on a budget, and make cost-effective food choices
-Read ingredient labels, nutrition information, and price tags
-Store food safely and manage leftovers
-Use adapted techniques and tools to increase independence
-Recognize emergencies, create a contact card, and know when to ask for help
-Stay focused and minimize distractions while cooking
Parents, guardians, and caregivers are encouraged to attend at no additional cost. This course provides valuable opportunities to learn how to support skill-building and independence at home while creating a safe environment for growth and learning.
Support persons will learn how to:
-Encourage independence while providing appropriate supervision
-Determine when to increase or decrease support
-Safely include individuals with disabilities in everyday cooking activities
-Respond calmly and effectively to emergency and non-emergency situations
-Build connections and share experiences with other families and caregivers
Who Should Attend?
Individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, along with a parent, guardian, caregiver, or other support person who will help reinforce skills at home.
