The Hospital of St Cross & Almshouse of Noble Poverty | Winchester, EN
Join a small-group guided tour (max. 20 people) exploring the Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty, the oldest almshouse in England still in continuous use.
Your walk begins beneath the historic Beaufort Tower before wandering through tranquil quadrangles and gardens, where medieval stewponds, ancient trees and the rhythms of daily almshouse life still endure. Along the way, you’ll discover the covered Ambulatory, the Brothers’ quarters, the remarkable Triple Arch and the beautiful Church of St Cross — the only surviving building from the original 12th-century foundation.
Hear stories of medieval hospitality, daily life for the resident Brothers, and the centuries-old tradition of offering the Wayfarers’ Dole to travellers.
The tour finishes inside the atmospheric Brethren’s Hall and Old Kitchen, once the heart of medieval feasting and charity.
Afterwards, those who wish can knock on the Porter’s Lodge and receive the traditional Wayfarers’ Dole - a small cup of local ale and a piece of bread.
