Prepare for the Day of Atonement with a cleansing swim and space to reflect together in community.
About this Event

Join us on Sunday, September 20, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, in the last few hours before we enter the High Holiday of Yom Kippur, as we mark the oncoming of the Day of Atonement. Inspired by the Jewish practice of Mikveh (ritual immersion), we'll be reflecting on our years, before cleansing in the water, followed by a light and warming picnic and hot drinks.

Everyone welcome, regardless of affiliation with other Jewish communities, organisations or background, including non-Jewish partners and family members. This event is for all ages, and everyone is welcome. Note that anybody under the age of 18 will need to attend with an adult, who will take full responsibility for them.

A light vegan picnic will be served after the swim, with gluten and dairy options. Please be in touch with any additional dietary requests. All ingredients will be certified kosher and cooked and served on kosher dishes.

Everyone is responsible for their own swimming and water safety. The water is cold and potentially rough. Please bring your own swimming clothes, towels, etc. If you're not up for a swim, you're also welcome to come along and join in symbolically from the shore.

We will be travelling over rough and uneven ground, including several steps. Seating will be on the ground, with blankets provided, although you're welcome to bring your own chair if you'd like.

The event will take place in Glasgow's Southside. The exact location will be sent to registered participants a week before the event. Participants will be responsible for their own transportation. Please note that the location is not accessible by public transport. However, we will endeavour to set up ride sharing from Giffnock Station for those who need. If this is the case, please contact Sydney as soon as possible at [email protected]. If knowing the location affects your ability to join the event, please contact Sydney at [email protected] for further details. Please note that the location listed on Eventbrite is just a placeholder, and is not an accurate location, please don't turn up there.

If this is your first time joining a Jewish community event, we might reach out beforehand as a security procedure. If this is the case, please register by Sunday, September 13.
