Plant Chemistry for Plant Nerds
About this Event
Are you a plant person? An herb nerd? A foodie? Want to better understand what factors can make a plant nutritious, medicinal, toxic or delicious, and how to engage with them safely and effectively?
Join staff from the Environmental Learning Center at our Lakeside Classroom on the campus of Clackamas Community College for a beginner's hands-on introduction to the chemistry of plants.
Each week will focus on a different main category of plant constituents and include a hands-on activity that demonstrates their distinctive properties. We'll explore ferments, extracts, teas, pigments, aromatics and more as we explore the common chemical constituents that make plants the main source for human food and medicine worldwide.
No chemistry or horticulture/botany background necessary, but welcome!
Other topics of discussion may include:
- Plant families and botanic classification
- Ethnobotany and various culturally/regionally/historically specific uses of plants
- Solvency, polarity, extraction and stability of various constituents
- Preparing, processing and storage tips
