Do you have a favorite artist that inspires you? Is it their subject matter, their use of color or brush strokes? Let this be the starting point in this class. We will take what that artist does and apply it to your painting style.

Please be ready to share samples of that artist’s work and what it is about their style that excites you.

It is important to build an artist community, where members of the class get to know each other and support each other. Also important is the relationship between instructor and student. My goal is to create a safe atmosphere for creativity.

This class is designed to be an oil painting session and those supplies will be provided. But, if you wish to work in another medium, please bring those materials along as well. A small 11 x 14 canvas will be provided, but again if you prefer to work larger, please bring that along to the first class.

Class 1: introductions, what is it that you hope to achieve in this class? Briefly, what is your background? What is it about the Artist you selected that inspires you? What do you hope to achieve from being inspired by their style? What do you leave in? What do you change? Using white charcoal on a toned canvas we will begin a detailed drawing which will allow a well-thought-out painting. The instructor will provide positive feedback.

Class 2: brief critique on accomplishments from week one. Instructor demonstration. Discussion on color theory and how to mix colors. Use of brushes and pallet knives and liquid mediums investigated. Where to start? The student will receive continued feedback throughout the class.

Class 3: class will begin with a critique, what was accomplished last week, what are the goals for this week? The student will further develop your painting toward completion in this session. Continue positive support throughout this process.
