NY Tea Ceremony "Savoring Matcha and Incense"

About this Event

The world of chanoyu is filled with quiet pleasures: the beauty of seasonal flowers, the fragrance of incense, and a bowl of matcha shared together.

August is the season of Obon in Japan—a time to remember and honor those who came before us. As incense has long been associated with prayer, remembrance, and reflection, this gathering will feature a traditional chanoyu ritual called Kōshomō 香所望.

In Kōshomō, incense prepared by the first guest is passed among the participants, allowing everyone to appreciate its fragrance together. We will experience two different types of incense, each with its own distinctive character.

As the fragrance gently fills the tea room and quiets the mind, the bowl of matcha that follows may feel even more vivid and meaningful.

Dress code:

Western-style clothes are acceptable. No sleeveless shirts, or short mini skirts. Please bring a clean pair of white socks. (We have some extra)

Please take off jewelry and watches.
