Nature Delights on the Crosstown and Double Cross Trails
About this Event
We’ll highlight Nature in the City’s beloved habitat sites–Adah’s Stairway and the Green Hairstreak Corridor–starting at Duboce Park on the Double Cross Trail and ending at 16th and Kirkham on the original Crosstown Trail. In between we’ll trek over Buena Vista Park and Twin Peaks and through the Laguna Honda Trail System.
Note that this is a one-way walk with different starting and ending locations.
Walk Leaders: Helen Doyle and Ella Bhat
Helen Doyle, nature lover and educator, serves on Nature in the City’s advisory council and on the steering committee for Reimagining San Francisco. She also represents Nature in the City on the Crosstown Trails Coalition and is a docent at the SF Botanical Garden, Año Nuevo State Park, and Alcatraz Historic Gardens She loves to explore nature in the City with like-minded people.
Ella Bhat is the Garden & Habitat Restoration Programs Technician for Nature in the City. Born and raised in San Francisco, Ella graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Welfare and minors in Education and Food Systems. While at Cal, Ella focused on environmental and food justice through her internship at Malcolm X Elementary School, where she taught kids how to garden and grow food for their community.
Details:
Join us as we explore different habitats and microclimates in some of San Francisco’s most natural landscapes. We’ll take a leisurely pace with frequent stops to see plants and wildlife, take in the stunning views, and catch our breath. We’ll cover about 6-6.5 miles with a 1400-1500 elevation gain. Be prepared for hills, stairs, some dirt paths, sun, wind, fog (this is San Francisco, after all!).
Preparation:
Bring water and a sack lunch that we’ll enjoy when we get to a good spot along the way. Public restrooms at start in Harvey Milk Center and a few spots along the way.

Transportation:
SF Muni to start: N-Judah stop right there, J-K-L-M a few blocks away. N-Judah and several bus lines near end.
Street parking also available on streets near Duboce Park (check for restrictions, fees, etc.).
Weather:
Rain will cancel. We will email participants the morning of walk if we cancel.
Cost:
Our nature walks are free and open to the public (with RSVPs requested). We kindly suggest a donation of $20 per person or whatever amount is right for you.
Donations can be made to Nature in the City on the day of the event in cash or online.
