MOSAIC COURSE - 28 JUNE 2026

Join us for an exciting mosaic course in June at the Llanover Hall Arts Centre! This in-person event is perfect for beginners and enthusiasts alike. Immerse yourself in a fun and interactive environment where you'll discover various techniques and materials to create stunning mosaic pieces. Our experienced instructor will guide you through every step, ensuring you gain the skills and confidence to design your own unique masterpiece.

Once you learn the basics you will be able to create mosaics at home using the minimum of equipment and materials, which are often reclaimed and then re-used for our mosaic images. The mosaics you produce on the one-day course will look professional. The course is run by experienced mosaic artist and sculptor Barry Akins.

If you have an idea for your own mosaic, bring a picture along, but Barry will have plenty of designs that you can use, including various cut-out shapes and surprising inventive ways of making a mosaic.

The course will include:

Instructions on what makes a good mosaic design, different tiles and materials that can be used, types of backing board, adhesives, tools for cutting tiles and how to use them, health and safety, grouting, polishing and fixing mosaics.

The course also covers the different mosaic techniques known as the direct method and the indirect method.

All materials and tools are supplied, and you will be able to take home your finished mosaic.

The course is suitable for beginners.

During the course you will be given a detailed handout to take home, which covers all the different aspects of mosaics.

The emphasis is on the practical and on producing your own finished mosaic. It will enable you to make your own mosaics in the future.

There are a maximum of 10 places available, so each student will receive plenty of one-to-one tuition. Tea /coffee and biscuits will be provided, but please bring a packed lunch.

Barry Akins has over 30 years’ worth of experience and has produced many mosaics for various local authorities, hospital trusts, and other institutions.
