Minnie Evans: Draw or Die, Film Screening

Global Education Center invites you to a special screening of Minnie Evans: Draw or Die, a one-hour documentary exploring the life and artistic legacy of Minnie Evans, one of the most significant African American artists of the 20th century.
Born in 1892 and raised by her grandmother in Wilmington, NC, Minnie Evans began drawing in the 1940s after years of dreams and an inner voice urging her to create. Over her lifetime she produced an estimated 3,000 works, entirely self-taught, each one unique. Her paintings and drawings now live in the permanent collections of prominent museums across the country.
The film draws on rare recorded conversations between Evans and photographer Nina Howell Starr, preserved in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art archives, alongside her artwork, archival photography, and the coastal North Carolina landscapes that inspired her.
Following the screening, join us for a discussion with filmmaker Linda Royal and an art-making activity led by local artist Thandiwe Shiphrah. Light refreshments will be available.
This screening is presented as part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, a program of South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
