Mini - Mekons at White Lilac
About this Event
Some bands come through town. The Mekons leave fingerprints.
Mini-Mekons brings the stripped-down, street-lit version of one of the most singular bands to ever crawl out of punk rock and stomp gloriously into country, folk, art, politics, heartbreak, trouble, and song.
This intimate lineup features Sally Timms and Jon Langford, founding members of The Mekons, joined by writer/performer Martin Billheimer and esteemed Chicago guitarist John Szymanski.
This is not nostalgia. This is not a tribute to themselves. This is the Mekons with the paint scraped back: songs with dirt under the nails, stories with bad luck in their pockets, harmonies that sound like old friends arguing beautifully at closing time.
Sally Timms is a founding member of The Mekons and is one of the most distinctive singers in underground music — dry, devastating, elegant, funny, and fearless — with a voice that can make a room feel like a confession booth, a tavern, and a battlefield all at once.
Jon Langford is also a founding member of The Mekons and The Waco Brothers, a punk/alt-country pioneer, visual artist, writer, agitator, and one of Chicago’s great adopted musical citizens.
Martin Billheimer brings the city with him — writer, performer, historian of Chicago’s ghosts, alleys, institutions, scams, saints, and sinners. John Szymanski brings the guitar work: sharp, atmospheric, muscular, and strange in all the right places.
The Mekons have been called genre-defying, influential, impossible to pin down, and one of the world’s great live bands. They began as art-school punks in Leeds in 1977 and somehow became something bigger, weirder, tougher, and more human than almost anybody expected.
At White Lilac, you get the rare version: close enough to see the grin, the raised eyebrow, the cracked halo.
A little punk. A little country. A little Chicago. A little beautiful ruin.
