Mid-Michigan Spartans Present: A Spartan's Will
About this Event
Given our proximity to campus, many Mid-Michigan Spartans are deeply connected to campus units and programs. The connections go beyond the intersections shared in life.
Community members, alumni, and employees from Mid-Michigan are more likely to have included their favorite aspect(s) of campus in their estate plans and trusts. Not all who have done so have made a point to inform MSU of their decision and to document their wishes directly with MSU.
Often, MSU learns of an estate gift when an executor contacts University Advancement to arrange for the transfer of funds. When this happens, the donor's intentions may not align with what the university is able to honor, and an effort is made to identify the closest suitable option. For example, if an estate gift is intended to benefit a unit that no longer exists, similar alternatives need to be considered. If the amount of a gift does not align with what the estate is instructed to support, alterations to the plan need to be made without the thoughts of the donor. For example, the intention may be to fund a program or position, but the amount is more or less than is suitable.
When donors engage appropriate staff in life, it helps to ensure their intentions can be realized, to create planned alternatives if conditions change, to reveal options to maximize their planned contribution, and to create ways to experience the impact their intended gift will have on MSU.
This event is for individuals who already have an existing trust/estate plan, or who are already engaged in the process of preparing a trust/estate plan with a legal advisor, and intend to include MSU in their philanthropy. Participants will learn:
- What estate and asset information are required to document a gift with MSU
- What estate and asset information are not required
- The difference between a revocable and non-revocable gift
- How to make changes to an estate plan, if needed
- The process for engaging the units donors intend to support to determine unique and evergreen options to direct their estate contributions towards
- Ways Planned Giving donors engage with the university in-life that contribute to the eventual impact of their estate gift
- How Planned Gifts are stewarded at MSU.
