Manakau Heads Coastal Walk

Greetings Everyone - Join us on Sunday as we walk along the coastline to the Manukau Heads and onto Wattle Bay.

This Sunday’s hike begins at Hamilton’s Gap, tracing the wild west coast of the Awhitu Peninsula. We walk north along firm black sand beneath dramatic white sandstone cliffs, timing our start two hours before a midday low tide to avoid the surf’s reach.As we round Manukau South Head, striking rock formations emerge, and across the harbour mouth, Whatipu and the Waitākere Ranges beckon.

The route is mostly easy, with steady footing on sand and rocky shelves.A final short scramble over Taratara Point—also known as Cake Island—adds a touch of adventure before we finish at Wattle Bay, satisfied and windswept.
