Thinking Culture presents a one-day event that explores the environmental meaning of storytelling.
About this Event

What happens when memories, gestures and storytelling merge with stories of the landscape? This event explores the relationship between the more-than-human, oral traditions, and embodied histories.

(11:00–11:30 am) Welcome

(11:30 am) Screening of Le Nemesiache’s film The Sybils (1978, ⏳ 26’).

In a journey through the realms of dreams, caves, and waterscapes, the Neapolitan feminist group Le Nemesiache retraces the forgotten stories of ancient prophetesses. Neglected by dominant historical narratives, the memory of these seers can still be found in stones, waves of the sea, and volcanic smoke.

(12:30–4:00 pm) Weaving Timelines – a collective reading ritual of Trinh T. Minh-ha's book Grandma’s Story, with Sarah Shin.

We will read from the book as a shared act of listening: to each other, to the text, and to ancestral echoes. The workshop will be directed and facilitated by Sarah Shin, director of Silver Press (London). All voices are welcome, and no previous experience is required. Blankets and pillows will be provided, but feel free to bring yours.

(4:00–4:30 pm) Break

(4:30–5:30 pm) Video installation Perls fanné par tours/ Perle Sparse (=Sparkled Pearls) by Vashish Soobah (2024, ⏳ 30’).

Which memories do we bring with us when we migrate? Despite not experiencing the Mauritian diasporic journey firsthand, Soobah’s memories are shaped by sugarcane fields, séga rhythms, and gestures passed down to him by his parents during his childhood. Perls fanné par tours is a journey in the sense of belonging, exploring the coexistence of oral history and the stories of the sea.

We will also be raising funds for Nablus Women Support Centre.

Vegan food will be served at the beginning of the day; participants can show up at any time during the event.

This event is curated by the PhD researcher and curator Sara Guidi, as part of Thinking Culture Programme 2025/26.
