In this engaging workshop, participants will tune in to the hidden language of the forest and learn practical tools for identifying birds by their songs and calls. While birds are often easier to hear than to see, many people find it challenging to remember and recognize the sounds they hear outdoors. This workshop introduces a simple and systematic approach that makes learning birdsongs both accessible and enjoyable.
We will begin the day with a short indoor presentation that introduces the key qualities used to describe birdsongs. Together we will explore features such as:
• Pitch
• Volume
• Tempo
• Rhythm
• Texture
• Repetition
By building a shared vocabulary for describing bird sounds, participants will develop new ways to listen more carefully and recognize patterns in the songs they hear.
After this introduction, we’ll head outdoors to put these listening tools into practice. As we move through the landscape, participants will tune in to the distinctive sounds of local birds and practice describing what they hear. We will also explore practical techniques for remembering bird songs, including mnemonic devices and vocal imitation.
These playful and effective strategies make birdsong identification approachable for anyone. With practice, participants will begin to recognize and remember the unique musical signatures of the birds around them.
No birding or musical experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to listen closely.
Please Bring
• Binoculars if you have them (loaner pairs will be available if needed)
• Weather-appropriate layers and comfortable outdoor footwear
• A notebook and writing utensil for taking notes
