Join us for an immersive exploration of the vascular plants of the Southern Appalachian Mountains—one of the most botanically rich regions in North America. This field-based course emphasizes hands-on identification, ecological context, and an understanding of plant diversity across a range of habitats.
Participants will learn to recognize major plant families and genera using diagnostic morphological traits, dichotomous keys, and field guides. Daily field excursions will focus on forests, wetlands, rock outcrops, and high-elevation communities, giving students firsthand experience with the region’s remarkable floral diversity.
The course is ideal for students, natural resource professionals, educators, and serious amateurs seeking to strengthen their botanical skills. No prior advanced botany coursework is required, though comfort working outdoors is encouraged.
