With hundreds of thousands of spectators worldwide, and mini-festivals from Houston to Doha, India’s iconic Jaipur Literature Festival is known as “the greatest literary show on Earth” (Tina Brown).
In conjunction with the Asia Society and the Center for Fiction, NAC will host the tenth edition of JLF New York, an international edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival —which celebrates conversation, bold ideas and exceptional storytelling, in the voices of speakers ranging from novelist Alka Joshi and curator Sonya Rhie Mace to Oppenheimer biographer Kai Bird.

Art: Resistance and Restitution
Vishakha Desai and Angela N. Carroll in conversation with Carol Becker
Across museums, monuments and city streets, visual art has become a site of political struggle and collective memory. Vishakha Desai’s edited anthology Politics of Visual Arts in a Changing World features case studies, artist spotlights and essays that document the resistance in art. Angela N. Carroll, writer, art historian and contributor to the anthology, examines Black identity in her curatorial work. With Carol Becker, Dean Emerita of the Columbia University School of the Arts, the expert panel reflects on a decade that has redefined the role of artists and institutions, exploring how images bear witness, question authority and imagine more equitable futures.
Carol Becker is Professor of the Arts and Dean Emerita of Columbia University School of the Arts. She received her PhD in English and American Literature from the University of California, San Diego. She is the author of numerous articles and several books including: The Invisible Drama: Women and the Anxiety of Change; The Subversive Imagination: Artists, Society and Social Responsibility; Zones of Contention: Essays on Art, Institutions, Gender, and Anxiety; Surpassing the Spectacle: Global Transformations and the Changing Politics of Art; Thinking in Place: Art, Action, and Cultural Production. Most recently, she has authored two memoirs of a trilogy: Losing Helen, George's Daughter and a third in process, A Time of Radical Imagining: California 1968-78.
Angela N. Carroll (MFA) is an accomplished writer, curator, and art historian. Carroll has organized exhibitions that examine and celebrate Black identity and community memory. Her latest effort, Jerrell Gibbs: No Solace in the Shade at the Brandywine Museum of Art is accompanied by a monograph published by Rizzoli New York. She has contributed critical writing to publications produced by The Baltimore Museum of Art, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the CueArt Foundation, among many others. Carroll intermittently teaches at American University, MICA and UMBC.
An internationally recognized scholar, educator and a museum leader, Dr. Vishakha Desai is President Emerita of Asia Society. She is a senior fellow and past Chair of Committee on Global thought and has served as senior advisor for Global Affairs President Bollinger at Columbia University. In addition to scholarly publications and exhibition catalogues, Desai's books include an award winning g memoir, "World as Family" (Columbia, 2021).
