About this Event

A film and public discussion exploring how design and technology could reshape funerals, mourning, and remembrance in near-future Japan. Join us for a special screening of Interfuit, a 38-minute short film exploring how emerging technologies might reshape funerals, mourning, and remembrance in near-future Japan. What happens when some of our most intimate and culturally significant rituals become entangled with new technologies? Through the story of a man revisiting his father’s virtual funeral space, Interfuit imagines new forms of remote attendance, digital memorialization, and remembering, inviting us to consider how new technologies could change the ways we experience grief and connection.

Interfuit has received international festival recognition, including Best Indie Short at the 9th Tokyo International Cinema Awards, an Honorable Mention at the Golden Harvest Film Festival, and selections at film festivals in Japan, Italy, and the United States.

The evening will begin with a brief introduction to how design and filmmaking can be used to explore possible technological futures by SFU professor William Odom, followed by contextual remarks from the producer, Daisuke Uriu. After the screening, invited panelists will respond to the film before opening the conversation to audience questions and reflections.

This event is free and open to the public.
