Indian and Mortar Rock Earth Day 2026 Adopt-a-Crag

Join the Bay Area Climbers Coalition and Touchstone Climbing to help freshen up the beautiful and historic Indian Rock and Mortar Rock bouldering area, located in the hills of Berkeley.

Volunteer Roles

Attendees will be taking on the following projects:

• Weeding
• Mulch distribution
• Trash pick-up
• Pathway cleaning

Where is Indian Rock Park?

Indian and Mortar Rock climbing areas are in Huichin, located in the hills of Berkeley, just east of Solano Avenue. Please plan to meet at 5pm at the park, near the "Indian Rock Park" sign near the top of the stairs, on Indian Park Avenue. We will have a table with a sign-in sheet and waivers.

Logistics:

Safety - We are HUGE on safety! There will be a safety talk before the beginning of the event. Please note that we require all participants to be present for the safety talk and wear closed toe shoes. Unfortunately, we cannot allow anyone to participate who does not attend the safety talk and wear closed toe shoes.

Food - Please bring your own food, water and snacks.

Water - Please bring your own water and water bottles.

Tools - We will be getting tools and gloves from the Berkeley Parks Dept, but feel free to bring your own work gloves if you prefer.

Clothing - Sturdy, closed toe shoes are mandatory. It can be quite sunny, so a hat and sunscreen are highly recommended.

Accessibility - Both Mortar and Indian Rocks are on steep hillsides, accessed by several stairs. The terrain is unpaved dirt and mulch, and much of the work will involve the use of hand tools. If any of these conditions would be difficult for you, but you would still like to be involved, please sign up and email us a description of your accommodation needs at [email protected], and we will work together to find an alternate role for you.
