About this Event
Event Photos

With history enthusiast and Lowland Leader Hannah Roe joining us for this one, we are in for an absolute geek-fest! As well as offering some spectacular Peak District views, this is a fabulous walk with lots of interesting history and geology to learn about along the way. The two promontories, Carl Wark and Higger Tor, offer some wide reaching views from their gritstone edges. Higger Tor is also an Ethel for any hill-baggers amongst us and Carl Wark boasts a magnificent Iron-Age hill fort. Over Owler Tor and Burbage Edge are also beautiful rocky edges to explore. This walk is classed as moderate and suitable for most fitness levels and abilities with some sure-footedness required for some of the terrain.

Distance: 6 miles/10km

Level: Easy/Moderate/Challenging

Elevation: 900ft/270m

Time: 4-4.5 hours

Who will be your guides?

Emily: Hi! I’m a Mountain Leader based in Glossop at the edge of the Dark Peak. I’ve always been outdoorsy since being a young girl but hiking became a real obsession in 2019 when I started to go solo. I aim to inspire other women to learn the many benefits of exploring in the outdoors and I’m passionate about sharing my love for adventure with you!

Hannah: Hello! I'm a journalist and writer whose spirit of old-fashioned adventure has taken me across the UK in search of untold stories. My natural history Instagram, hannahroeoutdoors, has gathered more than 80,000 followers in just over six months. With outdoor and navigational qualifications and a vintage sense of exploration, I open up the landscape to everyone—turning even the most ordinary walk into a historical discovery, equipping everyone with the knowledge and excitement they need to become an old-school adventurer.

Transport:

We will be meeting at National Trust Car Park - Longshaw Estate - Woodcroft Grindleford, Sheffield S11 7TZ Google Maps which is free for NT members or around £8 all day paid by cash, card or PayByPhone.

Meet at 9.45am to set off at 10am.

What to bring:

  • Hiking boots (preferred for the terrain and the mud) or trainers with good grip
  • Plenty of snacks and a packed lunch
  • Rucksack
  • Water (at least 1 litre)
  • Warm layers & Waterproofs
  • Sun protection
  • Walking poles (optional)
  • A small first aid kit with any personal medications

Terrain:

Mostly trails and footpaths, some uneven moorland terrain, some muddy fields. There are stiles to climb on this walk.

Toilets:

There are toilets at the car park but none along the way on the walk so we may have to embrace the good old ‘wild wees’ whilst we’re out!

Safety:

The whole point of the walk is to be an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone so we will keep to steady pace to suit the group. It's about taking in the views, learning about the history and geology of the area and being in nature, not about rushing to the finish line. Having said that, you are responsible for your own health and safety and with all outdoor activities, there can be risks involved. If you are unsure as to whether you are fit to come on this walk, please either consult your doctor or let us know your concerns. Please inform us of any medical conditions prior to the walk. Look out for an email a couple of days before and complete the attached medical form.

Our leaders are all qualified and hold level 3 Outdoor First Aid certificates so will be on hand in case of an emergency.

Dogs:

Dogs are more than welcome to come along but they must stay on leads.

Refund Policy:

Refunds will only be given if the event is cancelled. If you can no longer attend you are more than welcome to sell your ticket to someone else but please let us know if you do so. It is not possible to swap to another walk.

And FINALLY:

This walk will be going ahead whatever the weather, unless we deem the conditions dangerous so be ready to embrace the good old British weather!
