Join us for our second Cookbook Club as we share a potluck style meal and discuss Cal Peternell's TWELVE RECIPES.


HOW IT WORKS

Everyone will prepare a dish from START HERE by Sohla El-Waylly. Ahead of the event, you'll receive access to a spreadsheet where you and other attendees will sign up for the dish of your choice. Then, on April 30th, we'll gather in our kitchen space to discuss the author's perspective, as well as our own experiences cooking through the book. Cookbook club members will also receive a 15% discount in-store for the month of April (appliances excluded).


If you purchase a copy of the book with your ticket, you may pick it up in-store. Copies of TWELVE RECIPES can be picked up begining Friday, March 20th.


ABOUT THE BOOK

When his oldest son was leaving for college, Cal Peternell, the chef of San Francisco’s legendary Chez Panisse, realized that, although he regularly made dinners for his family, he’d never taught them the basics of cooking. Based on the life-altering course of instruction he prepared and honed through many phone calls with his son, Twelve Recipes is the ultimate introduction to the kitchen. Peternell tells you what basic ingredients and tools you need for a particular recipe, and then adds variations to expand your understanding. Each tip, instruction, and recipe connects with others to weave into a larger story that illuminates the connection between food and life. A deeply personal book, it was written by the chef alone and it glows with warmth and humor as he mulls over such mundane items as toast and rice to offer surprising new insights about foods that only seem exceedingly ordinary. It’s a book you’re as likely to keep by your bedside as your stovetop. With Peternell as your guide, the journey is pure pleasure and the destination is delicious.

Twelve Recipes features gorgeous color photos and inset illustrations by Peternell’s wife and sons (all artists), and forewords by celebrated chef Alice Waters and New York Times columnist and bestselling author Michael Pollan.


ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Cal Peternell grew up on a small farm in New Jersey and earned a BFA in painting from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Living in Italy with his wife, artist Kathleen Henderson, Cal was inspired to pursue a cooking career. After working at various acclaimed restaurants in San Francisco and Boston, including BIX, Loretta Keller’s Bizou, Lydia Shire’s BIBA, and Chris Schlesinger’s the Blue Room, he landed at Chez Panisse. Cal's new podcast, Cooking By Ear, encourages listeners to cook along and features exciting kitchen guests like Frances McDormand, Mira Nair, and Alexander Payne. Cal and his wife have three kids and live in the Bay Area.
