There is power in being informed! Please join us for a nonpartisan Candidates Forum for the DC Mayor's race on Wednesday, May 20th, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Our sponsors include the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, The George Washington University, and the League of Women Voters of DC, in partnership with the National Council of Negro Women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated's Federal City Alumnae Chapter, Many Languages/One Voice, and Multicultiral Community Service.
The event will be moderated by Steve Roberts, an award winning journalist and current J.B. and M.C. Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs The George Washington University. Attendees will hear from candidates on issues that are of great importance to our community including housing, education, workforce development, economy, healthcare, DC's autonomy, and more.
ABOUT US:
The Consortium represents higher education institutions across the National Capitol Region. It's DC member institutions include American University, Catholic University, Gallaudet University, The George Washington University, Georgetown University, Howard University, Trinity Washington University and the University of the District of Columbia. The League of Women Voters of Washington DC is a state and local affiliate of the League of Women Voters of the United States – a nonpartisan, grassroots organization dedicated to empowering voters and defending democracy. The National Council of Negro Women promotes education, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, health access, and social justice. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a 501(c)(7) organization and does not endorse candidates. All candidates certified by the DC Board of Elections have been invited to participate. This forum is for educational purposes only.
Additionally, Spanish language translation will be provided by forum sponsors, Multicultural Community Service (MCS) and Many Languages One Voice (MLOV), respectively. MCS offers comprehensive language services to nonprofit organizations, government agencies, academic institutions, and business in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. MLOV provide tools for greater civic participation of immigrants in the District of Columbia who do not speak English as their primary language
EVENT LOGISTICS:
Doors to the event open at 5:30 pm, and seating within the Jack Morton Auditorium will be provided on a first come, first served basis. For those hard of hearing, American Sign Language interpretation will be provided on site. Visitor parking will be available at the University Student Center Garage, located on H Street between 21st and 22nd streets, NW, however we encourage attendees to consider using public transportation. For those planning on attending the Candidates Forum virtually, instructions regarding how to do so will be provided via email in the weeks to come following your registration.
