Bigi linn! Join us on Wed Sept 17 7 PM at the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley when we pay tribute to Geordy Austin, a staunch supporter of Irish freedom and unification.
To say Geordy was passionate about all things Irish and especially Irish unification would be an understatement of massive proportions. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Geordy left school at the age of 14 to help support his family of 13. As a union dock worker in Northern Ireland, Geordy saw first hand the struggles imposed by the British majority against the Catholic minority Irish longing for a peaceful united Ireland. He had a passion for Ireland’s culture especially its language which was derided and often suppressed by British authorities.
Geordy emigrated to the states in 1981 and settled in Syracuse in 2000. Sadly he passed away September 21, 2024. Family and friends of Geordy will be on hand to tell us how they knew this man and his impact on Central New York’s Irish community.
You can attend this presentation at the H.A.R.P. Museum located on the second floor of the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley, 623 Columbia St, Utica. All are welcome to attend this program and the museum is wheelchair accessible. There is no charge for this event, however donations are most appreciated.
