First Battle of Newbury, 20th September 1643

The first major battle fought at Newbury marked a turning point in the bitter Civil War. The royalist forces commanded by King Charles I and Prince Rupert of the Rhine confronted those of Parliament led by the Earl of Essex, on Wash Common and its surrounding fields, southwest of the town. Essex, returning to London after successfully relieving the Siege of Gloucester, found his way blocked by an army intent upon destroying him and winning a distinct advantage in the fight to determine who governed the country - Parliament or the King. This is the tale of what happened when, where and how they clashed as told by Dr Christopher L Scott.
Dr Christopher Scott is a military historian, lecturer and co-founder of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides. He is also a member of the Battlefields Trust and the British Commission for Military History. He spent his career in Education and helped create New College in Swindon and was Director of Education for the Royal Armouries at the Tower of London. Chris has written extensively on the Civil Wars, the Monmouth Rebellion and the battles of the Duke of Marlborough, and has practical experience of leading a 17thC army, having been the Lord General of a reenactment Parliamentarian Army.
