A classic loop of the Fairfield massif taking in Nab Scar, Heron Pike, Great Rigg, Fairfield, Hart Crag, Dove Crag, High Pike and Low Pike.
Strenuous - Ascent - 1050m / 3445ft
The Fairfield Horseshoe is one of the most celebrated ridge walks in the Lake District, looping around the Rydal Valley near Ambleside. It’s loved for its sweeping views, satisfying circular route, and accessibility for experienced walkers.
The route forms a near-perfect horseshoe ridge encircling the valley. Starting and ending in Ambleside, hikers ascend one side of the ridge, traverse across several peaks, and descend the other—creating a natural loop.
The views are some of the best in the Lakes
On a clear day, you can see:
Windermere to the south
The Helvellyn range to the north
Langdale Pikes and beyond to the west
The constant ridge walking means the scenery is almost uninterrupted.
Mr Wainwright himself was a fan ot this walk - 'A great horseshoe of grassy slopes below a consistently high skyline, simple in design and impressive in altitude'.
Definitely bring lots of layers for this one, it's pretty exposed up there and weather can change quickly.
Bring enough food and water to sustain you, we will hopefully have a lunch with an amazing view.
