Welcome to Day 1 of the Fa'asamoa Village Life Summer Camp hosted by the Pasefika Roots Institute in partnership with the Anchorage Public Library and the Native Samoan Corporation! πΏ
Today we begin our intensive week of cultural immersion, perfecting our 10 songs, 2 dances, and final touches on our traditional handicrafts. This camp is open to all ages!
π LUNCH IS PROVIDED for all registered students.
π° COST: This summer camp is completely FREE to ensure all our children can participate. However, we are a community-funded program and gratefully accept donations based on what your family can afford to help us cover camp expenses.

ποΈ DAY 1: FOUNDATIONS & FA'AVAE (Monday, June 1st)
Theme: Introduction to the Village (Nu'u) & Basic Greetings
Daily Language Goal: Counting 1β10 (Numera) & First 3 Samoan Songs (Pesega)
Special Note: Parents must be present to assist children ages 5 and under. Volunteers are highly welcomed to help manage stations!
π Hourly Activity & Time Schedule
11:00 AM β 11:30 AM
Opening Circle & Vocals: Welcome protocol. Learning to count 1β10 in Samoan out loud through a rhythmic chant. Introduction and practice of Songs 1, 2, and 3.
11:30 AM β 12:15 PM
Siva & Fa'ataupati Basics: Introduction to the posture of the graceful Siva Samoa for girls and the basic rhythm/surface slaps of the Fa'ataupati (Slap Dance) for boys.
12:15 PM β 12:30 PM
π₯ͺ Lunch Break: 15-minute supervised lunch block (Lunch provided!).

Handicrafts & Painting: Beginning the foundations of Siapo (Bark cloth art). Participants will practice creating basic Mamanu (patterns) on practice paper.
1:15 PM β 1:45 PM
Culinary Arts Integration: Food safety and vocabulary. Students learn the Samoan names for core ingredients (Ufi, Talo, Fa'alifu) and help sort items.
1:45 PM β 2:00 PM
Reflection & Snacks: Reviewing the day's words, distributing lots of snacks, and closing prayer (Tatalo).

Creative Activity: The Numera Echo Game β Children step forward matching a drumbeat as they count to ten in Samoan.
Supplies to Bring / Wishlist for Donations: Brown postal wrap or butcher paper (for practice Siapo), washable black and brown acrylic paint, paintbrushes, and cases of bottled water.
Community Leaders & Presenters Note: Local elders, community leaders, and representatives from cultural organizations are encouraged to visit today to open the week with traditional blessings and storytelling!
