EL GRITO VIVE 2026: Commemorating the Legacy & Resistance of Grito de Lares

On September 23, 1868, in the hills of Lares, a dedicated group of armed Puerto Rican rebels rose up against Spain, took the city of Lares, planted their flag, and proclaimed independence and the abolition of slavery.

Join us for an evening of culture, music, and poetry to commemorate this historic event. Come hear about the ongoing resistance to U.S colonialism and imperialism in Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean, and throughout the globe. Learn about current struggles against privatization, displacement, repression, and elite megaprojects like Esencia.

Proceeds benefit , a cooperative housing project in Puerto Rico

This will take place Saturday, September 26, 2026 from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM, Doors 6:30 PM at La Peña Cultural Center.

Entry: $10 - $40 Sliding scale. No one turned away for lack of funds, space is limited.

Presented by Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice (CURYJ) and Bay Area Alliance for a Sustainable Puerto Rico, hosted at La Peña Cultural Center.
