Join us for a thought-provoking evening as Dr. Vivian Delchamps Wolf uncovers the troubling and revealing history of hysteria, a powerful diagnosis once used to explain a wide range of women’s bodily and mental experiences.
Tracing the intersections of nineteenth-century medicine, gender politics, and literary culture, this lecture examines how hysteria became a tool of medical authority—and how it contributed to the dismissal of women’s pain as mysterious, exaggerated, or performative.
Dr. Delchamps Wolf (PhD, UCLA English, 2022) is an Assistant Professor of English at Dominican University of California. Her research and teaching focus on 19th-century American literature, African American literature, and feminist disability studies. Her monograph, Resisting Diagnosis: Women’s Disability Literature of the 19th-Century U.S., reveals how women writers used literature to challenge and reimagine disabling systems of power.
