Bring the whole family and enjoy a fun tour around Durham Castle, with activities for children throughout!
About this Event

Take a tour around one Durham's most significant historic buildings with your family! Our friendly tour guides will take you through the gatehouse and into heart of the historic building, where you will experience history and tales from 1000 years of living history.

Enjoy fun stories and interactive activities throughout, a special quiz, and crafts and dressing up in our beautiful Great Hall at the end of your tour!

Built on the orders of William the Conqueror in the 1070s, Durham Castle began life as a motte-and-bailey castle. It soon became a palace to showcase the wealth of the Prince-Bishops whose semi-regal powers made them one of the most powerful political and military men in the country.

Tours will run at 1.45pm and 2.45pm.

This tour is recommended for children aged 4-10 and their families.

The historic nature and layout of the Castle means that the majority of the building is inaccessible to wheelchair users. The tour route involves many steps and staircases, some of which are uneven.
