Documentary screening: Edith Collier, A Light Among Shadows

This documentary is being shown in conjunction with the exhibition ‘Edith Collier. Local Landscapes’ currently on display at the Sarjeant Gallery and provides extraordinary insight into Edith Marion Collier’s life and work.
In her late 20’s, Collier left Whanganui to study at St John’s Wood Art School in London, UK. Whilst there her work flourished as she responded to European modernism. She sought additional tuition from Australian Margaret Preston and fellow expatriate Frances Hodgkins, attended Post-Impressionist exhibitions, and exhibited at the Society of Women Artists and the Women’s International Art Club in London.
World War I extended her stay in Europe for nearly nine years but eventually in 1922 she returned home to Whanganui where she continued to paint and exhibit however her avant-garde work was not well-received by the conservative local audience.
Written and directed by Michael Heath this documentary examines Edith Colliers life and work both in New Zealand and abroad and includes fascinating interviews from family members and friends who knew her well.
