An afternoon dedicated to migrant justice, border abolition and community organising at York St John University.
About this Event

Join staff and students in York for an afternoon of talks, workshops, discussions and community organising around border abolition and migrant justice in theory and in praxis.

The event will include:

  • A keynote talk and Q&A with Dr Joe Turner (University of York)
  • A roundtable discussion with local community organisers and scholar-activists
  • Mini workshops on border abolition and imagining alternative futures
  • Collective banner-making and other movement-building activities
  • Food from Yahala Mataam, refugee-led caterer and pop-up restaurant in York

This event follows on from our 2025/26 summer finale event, which was held online on Friday 26th June.

This time, we will come together in person to discuss, learn, organise and contribute to ongoing efforts to build solidarity and resistance in the face of escalating anti-migrant racism and the UK's increasingly hostile and violent border regime.

The event is free and open to anyone to attend, as part of the ongoing public Discussing Decolonisation series at York St John University. If you would like to receive updates about forthcoming events in the series, please sign up to our mailing list.

If you have any questions about the event itself, please email co-conveners Lucy Potter ([email protected]) and/or Laura Key ([email protected]).

Freedom of speech within the law and academic freedom are core principles of our University and underpin our mission to foster intellectual curiosity, rigorous debate, and the pursuit of knowledge. Our staff / students / SU colleagues are entitled to express their ideas and views, providing they do not violate the law. The law rightly prohibits speech that incites violence, terrorism and hate, but does not prohibit speech that others may find upsetting or offensive.

As a University that embodies social justice, we expect people to treat each other with dignity and respect, but it is not our role to censor ways of thinking or stifle debate between those who hold opposing views.

We understand that it can be frustrating to face views and perspectives that do not reflect our inclusive ethos at York St John University. However, we will not take disciplinary action against staff or students for lawful expression of their views, regardless of petitions, media campaigns or other external pressures.
