WHAT IS A CI JAM?
It is a space to experiment, to play, to dance, to connect with your own body and with others. There is space to come in and out of the Jam as you please, observing others at play, or nurturing yourself, while still 'being' in the group experience. This is a safe space with no sexuality or sexual advances and no displays of affection, such as kissing or stroking.
ELIGIBILITY
Ideally you have already attended a class, workshop or course before attending a jam.
If you not been to any event including a Jam, send me a quick message before attending, so I make sure you know what to expect.
WHAT IS CONTACT IMPROV?
Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dance and movement form based on the physical principles of touch, momentum, shared weight, and following a shared point of contact.
The form was founded in 1972 by Steve Paxton, who was radically experimenting as a contemporary dancer. Steve integrated other movement experiences including gymnastics and his studies in the martial art form Aikido. The first contact Improvisation form was workshopped in a 2 week lab where Steve invited 17 other dancers including Nancy Stark Smith. Following the laboratory, they performed this experimental style for the first time, in New York City.
CI has developed over the years into a more sophisticated, but still experimental form, that plays with all the ways we can contact with another person or the floor...rolling, sliding, mutual balance, the mechanics of lifting others and being lifted and even how to fall.
The interplay between dance and touch is a powerful somatic practice and the ever-changing points of balance creates new cognitive learning.
It can be healing and liberating to allow your whole body to experience contact with any part of the body in a safe creative dance and movement form.
